Major Development Work Completes At OPA Ledger Lane

A primary academy in Wakefield has marked the completion of seven-figure major-redevelopment works with a socially distanced celebration opening of its new extension.

Outwood Primary Academy Ledger Lane, based on Ledger Lane in Outwood, has been the site of extensive construction work over recent months with the primary academy undergoing a remodelling with a nursery, two reception classes, ICT suite and new reception and offices all being built.

The development at the primary academy had been necessary due to its increased popularity, leading to the joint decision by the local authority and the academy’s sponsor, Outwood Grange Academies Trust, to increase the admission number to a two form entry to accommodate this.

The opening of the extension, on 16th September, was attended by Outwood Board members, local MP Andrea Jenkyns, and Beate Wagner, Corporate Director, Children and Young People’s Services, WDMC.

Rachael Skirrow, Principal at Outwood Primary Academy Ledger Lane, said:

“We are thrilled the redevelopment is finally complete and it is brilliant to finally have our new spaces open for use.

“All the children in school benefit from the ICT suite and our whole EYFS area has been enhanced with the extension and new outdoor area.

“The early reaction from the children has been great, you can really see they are impressed by them. Most importantly, the support from parents during the construction period has been greatly appreciated and we thank them for their patience.”

The academy, which opened in 2012, was rated Outstanding by Ofsted following an inspection as well as being awarded the ‘Outstanding Progress’ Award at the Education Business Awards last year. The award is presented to the UK Primary School that has made outstanding progress in the management of its facilities, finances, and human resources and can demonstrate an increase in the educational performance of the school.

Rachael added:

“The building work has allowed us to improve our facilities and ensure we are able to continue to provide children with an education they deserve. We believe in putting children first, raising standards and transforming lives and our new facilities will really help us to achieve this aim.”
