Student-led initiative named Community Impact Award winner
The Outwood Family of Schools (Outwood Grange Academies Trust – OGAT) has scooped an award win at the Connect Yorkshire Business Awards, held on Thursday, November 20th, at the AMT Headingley Stadium.
The Community Impact Award recognises the profound positive effect of the Trust's student-led initiative, 'Out There,' a community action challenge that empowers students across Outwood's 41 schools to design and deliver meaningful community projects in their local areas.
The 'Out There' programme was launched in Autumn 2024 as a direct response to a desire among students to challenge negative stereotypes of young people and make a difference. Running for the first time this summer, students successfully delivered over 100 projects, showcasing incredible leadership, creativity, and dedication to their communities.
Julie Slater, chief executive principal at OGAT, said:
“I am beyond proud that the work of our children and young people has been recognised. The ‘Out There’ programme is a catalyst for change, empowering our children to be a force of positivity in their local communities.
“Their volunteering work has had a huge impact in their local areas. Bringing communities together is important work, and we are delighted to play our part.”
The prestigious award celebrates the Trust's renewed strategic direction, which places community at the heart of education. The Outwood Family of Schools remains dedicated to providing holistic, place-based support for families, including the establishment of dedicated family hubs, such as Hub House in Wakefield, which offers vital resources, including mental health services, a uniform shop, and adult learning programmes.
While Outwood's CEO, Lee Wilson, was also shortlisted for the Community Hero Award for his strategic leadership and commitment to regional renewal, the Community Impact Award win validates the Trust’s foundational belief that schools should be catalysts for positive community change.
The Connect Yorkshire Awards also successfully raised funds for its charity partner, Candlelighters, which supports families affected by childhood cancer.
